Micros

My time at Micros Fidelio was only 9 months between year 2000-2001.  I was to be an EM Administrator for their Enterprise Management Solution held at their UK Head Office in Slough.  This meant I had to commute 2 and half hours around the M25 motorway or move closer to Slough.  The thought of having to leave at 6 in the morning to be at work by 9am was not something i relished to do and travel back every day, but it was my first IT job, plus good experience to start me off on my IT journey, so i decided to move closer and rent a house with 2 other friends in Woking, Surrey, UK.  This meant the journey was around 1 hour to get from door to office every morning depending on one of the most busiest parts of the M25 London Orbital Motorway for traffic, plus passing by Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world and the traffic there.

Working in the EM office was pretty lonely with only my manager in the same small room with me and 5 huge servers and PCs.  These servers held the huge Micros databases to some the the biggest hotel and restaurant chains in UK.  Forte Posthouse (called Premier Inn nowadays) was my biggest client running 54 of their hotel restaurant Point of Sales (POS) systems inside their hotels.  We were closely monitored and had daily, phone calls, changes and sometimes office visits given to us by Forte’s liason regional manager. My job was to make these configuration changes to each system, make sure they got these changes updated daily at each site and also make sure database backups were run on DAT Tapes every morning.
